Alternative Water
Filtration Systems
Did you know that we get more free radicals from chlorine and
fluoride when we take our morning shower than anything else we
do? A filter can remove the chlorine and fluoride from coming in
contact with our skin. Also, putting a filter on your tap for cooking
water is very important. We need to drink half of our weight in
ounces. 70% of our body is water. Dr. David Schmidt, a scientist
from Life Wave technology says that what we all really die of is
dehydration.
Carbon Filters
These filters work by adsorption. They capture contaminants making
them adhere to the carbon in the filter. They reduce the level
of chlorine, lead and some lighter weight volatile organic compounds.
However, they do not remove bacteria, parasites, heavier volatile
organic chemicals or heavy metals.
Ceramic Filters
They work in a similar way to carbon filters, same benefits and
problems. They do have one additional benefit in that they may
alkalinize acidic water.
Ultraviolet Treatment
The water passes through a chamber that has an ultraviolet light.
It disinfects or reduces the amount of bacteria. It needs other
filtration to remove other impurities. It does nothing to help
the pH level of acidic water.
Reverse Osmosis
Water is forced through a membrane that removes contaminants.
It can remove chlorine, parasites, some bacteria, industrial
chemicals, lead, nitrate and toxic metals. It is not effective
at removing lighter weight volatile organic chemicals. Reverse
osmosis tend to remove all of the minerals from water, leaving
it acidic.
Distillation
Distillation systems boil water and collect the vapors. This process
leaves behind heavy metals including arsenic, kill any bacteria
that may be present.. However, volatile organic chemicals are
not removed with distillation as these chemicals tend to boil
before the water does and are collected in the vapors. As well,
alkalinizing minerals are removed, leaving the water acidic.
Bottled Water
Many people turn to bottled water for peace of mind. Yet,
bottled water is usually nothing more that water from a civic
water supply that has been run through one of the filtration
systems listed above. The deficiencies of the filtration method
used can be amplified since the water is stored in plastic
bottles that may contain bacteria. Water is best stored in glass.
Plastics can transfer odors, flavors or even leach residues in
the water stored inside bottles. |
